USSD Dana Point
Proudly serving Orange County, California, for over 30 years

Since its founding in 1968, United Studios of Self Defense has been established as the premier Martial Arts and self-defense organization throughout North America. Our unique system of Kempo-style Martial Arts is steeped in tradition and incorporates Shaolin Kung Fu, Japanese Karate, and take down/grappling arts of Jiujitsu.
The core of the USSD logo is the Bonsai tree, symbolizing wisdom, adaptability, strength, character, truth, and longevity - attributes we at USSD feel are the key characteristics to help our students lead happy, healthy, and successful lives.

Sensei
Mike Giannicchi
Owner and Chief Instructor
4th Degree Black Belt
With over 34 years of martial arts experience and nearly three decades as an instructor, Sensei Mike Giannicchi brings passion, precision, and care to every class he teaches.

Born and raised in Orange County, California, Sensei Mike began his martial arts journey at just eight years old. At 17, he joined United Studios of Self Defense under the instruction of Sensei Todd Aimer in Huntington Beach, where he earned his 1st Degree Black Belt in 1998. He currently holds the rank of 4th Degree Black Belt, with extensive experience in both traditional and modern self-defense techniques.

As the chief instructor of USSD Dana Point, Sensei Mike is committed to helping students of all ages build strength, confidence, and discipline.

Sensei Mike is proud to share his love of martial arts with his two children, who train alongside him at USSD Dana Point. When he’s not on the mat, you’ll often find him skateboarding—another lifelong passion that keeps him active, balanced, and connected to his roots.

After several years of teaching at locations throughout Orange County, Sensei Mike became the proud owner of the USSD Dana Point location in 2017.
His experience and dedication to creating an inclusive, welcoming environment attract students of all ages looking for high-quality martial arts instruction and a supportive community.

Sensei Mel
Assistant Instructor

Growing up in England, Sensei Mel started her martial arts journey at the age of seven, earning a black belt in Shotokan Karate before moving to California in 2007. She began training under Sensei Mike in 2022 and quickly reignited her passion for martial arts.
Sensei Mel brings a warm, encouraging energy to the dojo. Her fun-yet-challenging teaching style and attention to detail help students build confidence and a strong foundation from the start.

Outside the dojo, Sensei Mel is a professional graphic designer and homeschooling mom of two, passionate about creativity, family, and lifelong learning.

USSD Dana Point welcomes men, women, and children of all ages and professions to participate in private and group training programs.

Like the well-nurtured Bonsai, the roots of the United Studios family run deep – built on a foundation of traditional values with a modern-day approach to self-defense and personal development.

We look forward to seeing you in the dojo!
